As 2013 abruptly ends, I keep seeing other people posting about the last year and what was memorable for them. This got me thinking about my own experiences in 2013, and I realized that this was actually a momentous and incredibly busy year for me. So I feel the need to look back and jot down at least most of what happened to me and those close to me. I give you, in no order whatsoever, 2013! 2013 was my first full year out of college. Or any type of schooling, for that matter.
I worked full time the entire year. I opened a savings account. I got my first credit card, which I have been paying off in full as I go. (It's like I'm turning into an adult or something!) I cut my hair shorter than ever before (somewhere between a bob and a pixie cut). I celebrated my second anniversary with my boyfriend. My sister got hit by a car, which broke her leg. So I bought her a frakkin' sweet cane for Christmas. I nudged my mom into signing up for an acting class. She already wanted to; I was just the extra push. I created a professional website. I created a blog. I created a Tumblr (and subsequently lost a lot of time to the internets). I watched the SF Bay Bombers kick butt in roller derby, then lose by ONE point at the last second. I saw sooooo many operas!
I got to sing one of my favorite duets. I traveled to Oregon for the first time ever. I went to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and saw
I found Weed, CA. I drank jalapeño beer. I experienced the Avenue of the Giants. I began coaching with Marcie Stapp. I saw A Killer Story, then read for the playwright later in the year. I shot one student film and was cast in another. I improvised a vocal line over an electronica track and I'm not entirely embarrassed by the result. I found the perfect red lipstick. My cousin got married. He's the first in our generation of the family. My brother (in everything but blood; we grew up in the same neighborhood) had a beautiful baby girl. She's the first baby in our generation of the family. My grandmother passed away. I saw many many many films. I started watching The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, and Rachel Maddow on a regular basis. I read the local newspaper a lot. I read a whole bunch of books. I finished Hamlet (I always copped out around Act IV before) and actually enjoyed it. I read A History of Opera. I went snowboarding for the first time. I saw the Terracotta Warriors. I went to the SF Symphony and saw
I went to my first singalong at the Castro (Beauty and the Beast!). I auditioned for many things. I made some wonderful new friends. I made some really good recordings. I learned. I discovered. I ate new foods. I drank new drinks. I voted in my local election. I learned and sang new music. I listened to new music. I cooked. ...and there you have it; that seems to be most of it. I hope your 2013 was as eventful and fulfilling as mine. Here's to the highest of hopes for 2014. May we achieve all we set out to do this coming year. May we be happy. May we push forward in our lives. May we grow. May we love. May we live. Happy New Year!
